Fylde Coast Veterans FC
Fylde Coast Veterans FC was formed in April 2010 by aging sunday league players Paul Drinnan, Wai Hon Tsang, Mark Gannon and Chris Giles.
Inspiration
Veterans football matches are unfortunately few and far between. After constantly being asked by former players when the next Vets match would be held, the four mooted the idea of sticking a team of largely over-35's into the open age Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Football Alliance. Would there be enough interest? Could players who had excelled in the local leagues in their prime still do it? Or, were they past it and resigned to middle-age-spread and shopping with the missus on a sunday morning? The answer from former players was positive, so the club was formed.
The Vets play two types of matches - competitive and friendly.
- Competitive matches are played in the Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Football Alliance most sunday mornings during the normal football season against open-age (usually much younger) opposition. Players therefore need to be of good standard, fit and able to 'compete' at this level. The club philosophy is to give opposition teams 'a good competitive game'. With this in mind shirts on a sunday morning are highly sought after and competition is fierce, only the best available will make it onto the pitch. The Team manager is merciless in his selection policy, always picking the best available eleven rather than the soft option of trying to keep people 'happy'.
- Friendlies are played all year round against both Veteran and open-age opposition. The onus here is on enjoyment in a semi-competitive organised game. Roll on - roll off subs help the less able and less fit squad members get up to competitive standard again. The big part of our Friendlies is the social aspect, most matches include a compulsory attendance in the pub after the game - 'no pub, no play'.
Training
Training sessions are held every tuesday evening on Stanley Park Astroturf, 7.30pm. £3 subs. New over-35 players are always welcome, even if it is just to join in training. Regular trainers are first on the list for Friendly invites.
Home Ground
Our home ground is Stanley Park, we'll meet for home matches by 10.00am at the Sports Centre.
Players
Ideally players will be Over-35 years of age. For Veterans Friendly Matches this rule will be strictly applied. For BFSFA league matches (an open-age league) we will make exceptions as we see fit. Last season we welcomed two offspring of our players into the team occasionally on sundays in Paul Drinnan Jnr (17) and Ricky Teasdale (21), as well as from January 2011 the 16 year old nephew of Paul Veitch, keeper Kyle McManamy. Other youngsters do occasionally take part in training - this helps keep the numbers up and gives our Vets something to chase and kick rather than each other.
